Single rockflower anemone

Rock Flower Anemone

Rock Flower Anemones (Phymanthus spp.) are colourful, relatively compact anemones prized for their vibrant oral discs, contrasting tentacles and huge variety of patterns. From fluorescent greens and oranges to reds, purples and multicoloured specimens, no two need look quite the same.

Compared with many larger hosting anemones, Rock Flowers are generally less prone to roaming once they have found a suitable position, making them an attractive choice for mixed reef aquariums.

Care Guide

Care Level: Easy–Moderate

Lighting: Low–Moderate

PAR: Approx. 50–150

Flow: Low–Moderate, indirect

Placement: Rockwork or sand/rock interface

Temperament: Semi-aggressive

Feeding: Photosynthetic; benefits from occasional meaty foods

Growth: Slow

Maximum Size: Commonly around 10–15 cm, depending on specimen

Recommended Parameters

Temperature: 24–26°C

Salinity: 1.025–1.026 SG

Alkalinity: 7.5–9 dKH

Calcium: 400–450 ppm

Magnesium: 1250–1400 ppm

Nitrate: 2–15 ppm

Phosphate: 0.03–0.10 ppm

Rock Flower Anemones typically like to bury their foot securely into a crevice or beneath the edge of the rockwork, while keeping their oral disc exposed to the light. Avoid repeatedly moving one once it has attached and selected its preferred position.

Leave some clearance from neighbouring corals, as direct contact can cause stinging. Small portions of mysis, finely chopped seafood or other suitable marine foods can occasionally be offered to supplement photosynthesis.

With their compact size and incredible range of colours, Rock Flower Anemones can make an impressive addition to the lower areas of a reef aquarium.

Colour, pattern, size and expansion vary naturally between individual specimens and under different aquarium lighting.
