Symphyllia Coral
Symphyllia is a beautiful fleshy LPS coral recognised for its deep winding valleys, thick tissue and contrasting colour patterns. Often grouped with brain corals in the hobby, mature specimens can become impressive centrepieces as their tissue expands across the distinctive meandering skeleton.
Symphyllia generally prefers low to moderate lighting with gentle, indirect water movement. Strong flow should be avoided, as constantly buffeting the fleshy tissue against the skeleton can lead to irritation or damage.
Care Guide
Care Level: Easy–Moderate
Lighting: Low–Moderate
PAR: Approx. 60–150
Flow: Low–Moderate, indirect
Placement: Lower–Middle areas of the aquarium
Temperament: Semi-aggressive
Feeding: Photosynthetic; benefits from occasional targeted feeding
Growth: Slow–Moderate
Recommended Parameters
Temperature: 24–26°C
Salinity: 1.025–1.026 SG
Alkalinity: 7.5–9 dKH
Calcium: 400–450 ppm
Magnesium: 1250–1400 ppm
Nitrate: 2–15 ppm
Phosphate: 0.03–0.10 ppm
Leave adequate space between Symphyllia and neighbouring corals, particularly other LPS. A stable position on the lower rockwork or substrate is ideal, ensuring its expanded tissue cannot rub against sharp surfaces.
Occasional feeding with suitably sized meaty foods can encourage a strong feeding response and support growth, although the coral receives much of its energy through photosynthesis.
Colour, pattern and expansion can vary depending on lighting spectrum, flow and individual aquarium conditions.
