Lobophyllia Coral

Lobophyllia is a striking fleshy LPS coral known for its deep folds, inflated tissue and vivid colour combinations. Often referred to as a Lobo or Lobed Brain Coral, each specimen can develop its own distinctive patterns, making it an excellent centrepiece for an LPS reef.

Lobophyllia generally performs best under low to moderate lighting with gentle, indirect water movement. Its large fleshy tissue can be damaged by excessive flow or contact with sharp rockwork.

Care Guide

Care Level: Easy–Moderate

Lighting: Low–Moderate

PAR: Approx. 60–150

Flow: Low–Moderate, indirect

Placement: Lower–Middle areas of the aquarium

Temperament: Semi-aggressive

Feeding: Photosynthetic; benefits from occasional targeted feeding

Growth: Slow–Moderate

Recommended Parameters

Temperature: 24–26°C

Salinity: 1.025–1.026 SG

Alkalinity: 7.5–9 dKH

Calcium: 400–450 ppm

Magnesium: 1250–1400 ppm

Nitrate: 2–15 ppm

Phosphate: 0.03–0.10 ppm

Give Lobophyllia adequate space from neighbouring corals, as it is capable of stinging nearby specimens. Placement on a stable, relatively flat area also helps prevent its fleshy tissue from becoming damaged against the skeleton or surrounding rockwork.

Once settled, a healthy Lobophyllia can become impressively inflated, showcasing the colour, texture and intricate patterns that make these corals so desirable.

Colour and expansion can vary depending on lighting spectrum, flow and individual aquarium conditions.

[Likely] Exact requirements vary between individual Lobophyllia specimens and the conditions under which they were previously maintained.
